Gerald D Hines, founder and chairman of real estate firm Hines, died on 23 August, at age 95.

The news was announced by his son, Jeffrey C Hines, who has been running the firm as president, and now assumes the role of chairman and CEO of the Hines company.

“Beyond his significant, impactful career and his pioneering contributions to architecture, sustainability and the built environment, Dad felt his greatest achievement is the team of dedicated professionals who have and will continue to, carry on his legacy of peerless quality, integrity and innovation,” the new chairman and CEO said.

Hines founded the namesake company in Houston, Texas in 1957, a business which has grown into a $144.1bn (€121.9bn) real estate assets manager with a presence in 225 cities in 25 countries.

From 1996-2010, the founder made London his home base, having transferred day-to-day operations to his son, to become the firm’s CEO and president in 1990.

While abroad, he expanded into major western and eastern European markets. The firm also entered into Asia in the mid-1990s.
