Downing Renewable Developments has entered the data centre market with an initial pipeline exceeding 500MW of powered land opportunities across Sweden and Finland.
The UK and Nordics renewables developer said it had secured land for its most advanced developments across central Sweden and southern Finland, targeting grid connections before 2030.
Tony Gannon, head of Downing Renewable Developments, said: “Data centres and energy infrastructure are becoming increasingly interconnected. Access to power is a fundamental consideration when identifying where new data centre capacity can be developed, which makes this a natural extension of our existing renewable energy development capabilities.
“Our experience across renewable energy development gives us the ability to consider the data centre and its long-term energy requirements together, rather than as two separate pieces of infrastructure. We already have an advanced pipeline of more than 500MW and are progressing our first projects in Sweden and Finland.“
Tom Williams, head of energy and infrastructure at Downing, said: “This initiative is a natural evolution of our business and one we have been working on for some time.
“We believe that we are uniquely placed to provide firmed supply from portfolios of renewable energy generation assets to the data centres we are developing, providing long-term security and resilience and lessening the impact of these demand customers on the grid and the environment.”
