BioticNRG, a UK-based bioenergy platform owned by Palisade Real Assets and backed by Dutch pension fund investor APG Asset Management, has acquired Denmark’s largest thermophilic biogas facility, marking its first asset outside the UK.
Financial details were not disclosed.
BioticNRG’s acquisition of the Lemvig Biogas facility, which processes manure, organic waste and residual industrial products to generate renewable energy for the local community in Lemvig, establishes the platform’s first presence in continental Europe.
The transaction follows an expanded capital commitment from APG, the asset management arm of the Netherlands’ largest pension fund ABP, to support the platform’s broader European expansion strategy.
APG initially committed around £200m (€234m) to Palisade’s BioticNRG in 2024.
Iulia Grosu, APG’s senior portfolio manager of infrastructure, said: “The BioticNRG collaboration with the Palisade Real Assets team continues to fit ABP’s commitment to the energy transition, while securing attractive returns for its participants.
“The UK buildout of BioticNRG combined with the subsequent first steps into Europe with the acquisition of Lemvig Biogas are fully aligned with our long-term vision for sustainability.”
Stephen Burns, CEO of Palisade Real Assets, said: “We are excited to expand the APG mandate in the UK and into Europe with our first European acquisition.
“This transaction combines our operational expertise and long term institutional capital with the outstanding track record of Lemvig Biogas management, and represents a significant step in the continued growth of the BioticNRG fund.”
Niels Bjerre, chairman of Lemvig Biogas, said: “We are pleased to have found a buyer with solid experience in operating biogas plants and with a long-term perspective.
“It has been important for us to ensure a solution where the plant continues to operate with consideration for the local community and is further developed with the aim of accepting even more livestock manure from the municipality.”
Stefania Trivellato, managing director of BioticNRG, said: “We are entering an exciting new phase for BioticNRG. The continued support from APG and the expansion into Europe reflect the strength of our strategy and the significant opportunities we see in the bioenergy sector.
“The acquisition of Lemvig Biogas marks an important milestone in building our European presence, and we look forward to working closely with local stakeholders while continuing to grow a platform that delivers both strong environmental outcomes and long-term value.”
