Maine Public Employees Retirement System has made its first investment data centres and technology-related real estate, according to sources familiar with the matter.
It is understood that the pension fund has made a $30m (€25.4m) commitment to IPI Data Center Partners Fund, which is co-sponsored by Iconiq Capital, a family-office adviser that includes Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg among its clients.
The other co-sponsor is Iron Point Point Partners, which manages private real estate funds.
IPI Data Center Partners Management, which manages the fund, did not respond to emails seeking comment.
The fund will invest in data centres and other technology and connectivity-related assets across the US. It recently acquired a data centre campus in Fort Worth in Texas.
According to industry sources, US pension fund investment in data centres and cloud-related property has been limited.
GI Partners has been major player in the sector for several years, attracting investment from two of the largest US pension funds, California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) and California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).
