Westfield and Hammerson's redevelopment of the London borough of Croydon has moved a step closer after a local government committee supported a planning application.
Sydney-listed Westfield and UK REIT Hammerson have formed the Croydon Partnership for the £1bn (€1.2 bn) project.
The Croydon Partnership's scheme aims to transform Croydon town centre into a modern, 139,000 m2 retail, leisure and restaurant destination, together with a new public area, new car parking space and up to 600 new residential units, including affordable housing.
Westfield and Hammerson say that this will provide the 'kick start' to Croydon’s much-needed regeneration and will attract new residents and visitors back to the town while delivering a safe destination for families.
The planning approval is part of the partnership's wider 186,000 m2 vision to regenerate the town centre, including the adjacent Centrale shopping centre, which has planning consent for a refurbishment programme.
