Sustainable building certification is becoming a vital tool in managing and funding refurbishment plans, Redevco's managing director Clemens Brenninkmeijer has told PropertyEU.
After adopting BREEAM certification in 2007, Redevco now has 88% of its buildings certified and is working through the remainder. Brenninkmeijer, speaking at Expo Real in Munich, said the results would be incorporated into the company's business planning cycle.
The certification process allows the company to analyse the performance of its buildings and identify areas of improvement such as energy efficiency, waste or water consumption. The analysis is carried out at asset level but the cumulative effect will strengthen the company's portfolio, Brenninkmeijer explained.
'Per asset we look at where we are today, what are the different activities that we can do to improve it, and then looking at a natural moment in the building's life cycle we plan for the necessary investment CapEx or OpEx,' he said.
