US property investor Granite Investment Group has opened an office in Amsterdam to gain better access to European capital and European banking finance.

The office will be headed by Lodewijk Zweers, 41, who comes from Bouwfonds Asset Management. 'The office will provide better access to European bank loans and European capital invested in funds. It will make Granite less dependent on American financiers and investors, resulting in more solid business operations,' he said.

Zweers believes that the American property market currently offers Dutch investors numerous opportunities. 'The strong euro in particular is an added advantage for investors,' he noted.

Based in Irvine, California, Granite invests in five property segments (residential, self-storage, senior housing, office and industrial). The company plans to launch investment funds on the Dutch market in which American investors can also participate.
