The US State Department has signed a conditional agreement with Irish property developer Ballymore Properties to acquire a site for the construction of a new embassy at it's Nine Elms project, in London, according to a report in the Irish Independent.

The deal which is at the 'initial' agreement stage only is dependent on approval from the US Congress and local planning authorities the embassy said in a statement. It added that the existing embassy building in Mayfair would be offered for sale almost immediately. No financial details of the agreement were disclosed.

The new embassy will be located on a site in the group's regeneration plan for the Battersea area of London, according to Ballymore CEO Mulryan. The plan features a mix of residential units, leisure, commercial and retail space.

Commenting on the choice for the new site, US ambassador Robert Tuttle said: 'This has been a long and careful process. We looked at all our options, including renovation of our current building on Grosvenor Square.'
