No less than eight of the nine winners of the inaugural FT/ULI Sustainable Cities Awards held on Monday in London are American. The nine winners were selected from a group of 20 finalists. In total there were 86 entrants from 15 countries.
The eight US winners are Cascade Land Conservancy for its Cascade Agenda; the City of Chicago for its Green Homes, Sustainable Plans and Developments; Enterprise Community Partners for its Green Communities; the City of Greensburg, Kansas for its Sustainable Comprehensive Masterplan; Jones Lang LaSalle for its Portfolio Sustainability Management Programme; Kennedy Associates for its Responsible Property Investing; PNC Financial Services Group for its Greening PNC; and Vulcan for creating a New Model for Sustainable, Mixed-Use Urban Communities.
The only non-US winner was the New Songdo City Master Plan in South Korea by Kohn Pedersen Fox and Gale International. Jury chairman Reinhard Kutscher, management board chairman of German fund Union Investment, said it was encouraging to see so many American winners. 'The US is not generally seen as the most innovative country in this field.'
