The Urban Land Institute (ULI) has teamed up with London-based business newspaper the Financial Times in creating a new award for sustainable real estate. The Financial Times & Urban Land Institute Sustainable Real Estate Awards will be presented for the first time at a ceremony in London in June 2008, which will be preceded by a one-day conference.
They are intended to showcase examples of real estate sustainability which demonstrate the future direction of best practice, rather than simply celebrating past achievements. Candidates should be able to demonstrate financial viability as well as replicability and a capacity to inspire others.
Commenting on the new initiative, John Ridding, chief executive of the Financial Times, said: 'We believe these awards will provide an effective means of encouraging best practice in this important area.' Richard Rosan, President of ULI Worldwide, said: 'Growing concern over climate change is spurring demand for the inclusion of sustainable practices in the planning, design and development of cities and buildings worldwide.'
