The UK Government is planning to hand over about £1 bn of disused property to community groups in a move to revive local facilities, the Guardian newspaper has reported. The Department for Communities and Local Government, headed by Ruth Kelly, is launching this initiative providing £400,000 to monitor 20 pilot asset-transfer schemes. Under the plan, a new £30 mln fund, managed by the Big Lottery Fund, will support the asset transfers to the more than 1,500 community organisations expected to benefit from this initiative.
