Three UK cities - London, Oxford and Cambridge - are among the five cities best placed to attract technology and research companies in Europe, according to the European Tech Cities Ranking 2012 presented at MIPIM by Buck Consultants International.
The ranking is topped by Paris, with London, Oxford, Berlin and Cambridge making up the rest of the top five. It is based on an analysis of the competitiveness of 31 European cities for tech companies and R&D centres.
Buck Consultants compared the cities across five factors: their existing technological and knowledge base; availability and cost of knowledge workers; size and accessibility of markets; international accessibility and the international business climate (including factors such as venture capital and taxes). These factors are in turn subdivided into 25 indicators.
A notable finding, Buck said, was that major metropolises such as Paris and London, which are also leading trade, financial and tourist centres, dominate the ranking. 'These cities house a large number of highly qualified people and are also home to top universities and several R&D centres,' said Josefien Glaudemans, managing partner of Buck Consultants International. 'These three factors act like a magnet for international companies seeking new locations for knowledge-intensive activities.'
Buck Consultants International is a real estate and logistics consultancy headquartered in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, with offices in The Hague, Brussels, London, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Frankfurt and Chicago.
