Half of the top-10 players in PropertyEU's latest ranking of leading retail developers in Europe are listed companies.
Paris-listed Unibail-Rodamco heads the ranking of listed players, followed by Bucharest- and Johannesburg-listed New Europe Property Investments, Alterea Cogedim, Hammerson and Klépierre.
Extending the ranking to the top-20, just under half - or eight - of the players are listed companies. These include Vienna-listed Immofinanz, Paris-listed Immochan and Atrium European Real Estate. This is in line with last year's result for the top 20; however, only three listed companies made it into the top-10 in 2016.
The latest ranking is based on the total volume of completed retail schemes between 2014 and 2016. Unibail-Rodamco, Europe's largest listed real estate company, slipped one place to second spot this year based on projects completed during the period under review.
The Paris-listed shopping centre specialist ceded its place to Hamburg-based ECE which won the top spot with completed projects totalling 399,900 m2. Unibail-Rodamco was a close second, however, with 389,385 m2, just 10,000 m2 less than the winner.
In fact, Unibail-Rodamco's total volume of completed projects for the three-year period is actually higher than its score in 2016 when it won the number one position based on projects completed between 2013 and 2015. It was the first time ever that a listed retail real estate company topped the ranking since our annual survey was launched in 2007.
