Ten European shopping centres were among those which received recognition at the 31st Annual International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) International Design and Development Awards presented at the 2007 ICSC Centerbuild Conference in Phoenix, in the US.

'This is a great success story for the European shopping centre industry which continues to deliver innovative design. We are setting the global benchmark for sustainability too,' said Ermine Amies, managing director of ICSC in Europe, in a statement.

The awards, which were inaugurated in 1977, provide recognition for outstanding projects and involve both the creation of new retail projects and the expansion or redevelopment of existing ones.

The EuroPark Salzburg expansion project in Salzburg, Austria, designed by Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas, came away with two of the 10 awards. It was honoured with both the Design Award for Renovation or Expansion of an Existing Project and with the award for sustainable design. 'From its uses of sustainable materials to its sophisticated, monitored climate-control system, re-use of exhaust energy, recycling programmes and more, EuroPark Salzburg sets a new benchmark for sustainable design,' the ICSC said.

Merit Award Winners for new shopping centre projects included the Place d'Armes shopping centre in Paris, the McArthur Glen Barberino Designer Outlet in Florence, the Dundrum Town Center in Dublin and the Forum Coimbra shopping centre in Coimbra, Portugal. A Merit Award in the Mixed-Use category was assigned to Kanyon, in Istanbul.

Design Award Winners included Dolce Vita Porto in Porto, Portugal, the Ettlinger Tor Karlsruhe centre in Karlsruhe, Germany and Plenilunio in Madrid.
