TCN Property Projects plans to launch its 'TruckCity' concept at the BedrijfsautoRAI (European Road Transport Show) in Amsterdam on 25 October, before rolling it out on European motorways next year.
The Dutch firm said that its concept involved the construction of truck villages along important international transport routes and near logistical junctions such as airports and seaports. Comprising at least 6 hectares, these village will be open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week and offer facilities such as hotel and catering services as well as fitness and relaxation areas.
One of the main motivations for the 'Truck City' concept is increasing crime, and there will also be guarded car parks to ensure the safety of both the driver and the cargo. During a driver's rest period, maintenance and repairs and maintenance could also be conducted on trucks. 'Safety is becoming an increasingly more important theme in the transport sector,' Bert-Jan Hemmen, director of TCN Logistics, noted in a statement. 'Research has shown that in Europe companies suffer nearly EUR 8.2 bn in losses due to thefts committed along the roads, particularly at car parks without security. As a result, drivers frequently feel unsafe, and consequently, sleep poorly.'
