The city of Swansea in South Wales is planning to revitalise its city centre through a £1 bn masterplan aimed at linking the city centre with its waterfront. The city's ambition to develop a site which will be 'envy of Europe' has taken a major step forward as three key city-centre locations were identified on Monday as the first major development opportunities.

The St David's and Quadrant area will be redeveloped to create a modern 9-hectare retail scheme, including the St David mall, a Tesco supermarket and surrounding parking spaces. The second site is the car park at Paxton Street and County Hall. The 7-hectare site with 'stunning elevated views' will be transformed into a residential and office development including pubs, cafes and restaurants. The Sailbridge area will be converted into cafes and restaurants on the ground level and residential, office and hotel space on the upper levels.

A preferred developer is expected to be appointed by the end of the year. Chris Holley, leader of Swansea Council, said: 'These developments will transform Swansea and we will truly become a waterfront city to stand alongside the leading European destinations.'
