The Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, has reportedly made a EUR 280 mln volontary bid to acquire the Gran Hotel Villa d'Este luxury complex on Lake Como in Northern Italy. Newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Monday that the sultan, who owns the Dorchester Hotel in London, as well as two hotels in Paris, is offering up to EUR 280 mln for the 101,000 m[sup]2[/sup] complex. Villa d'Este comprises four luxury hotels and two private villas, Villa Malakoff and Villa Cima, on the lake. The paper added that a Dubai group has also launched a bid for the property. The offers will be discussed in a meeting to be held on September 1, the head of the resort Jean Marca Droulers said.
