Austrian property group Sparkassen Immobilien has announced the opening of its flagship Sun Plaza shopping centre in the Romanian capital. The project represents a partnership of the Vienna-based developer with the Romanian-French property company EMCT. The construction of Sun Plaza started three years ago and involved an investment of some EUR 200 mln.
In a statement last week, Sparkassen said that the complex is its second largest investment in Romania. The property, located in the south of Bucharest, was designed by UK architects Chapman & Taylor and currently provides around 80,000 m2 of retail space on a 208,000 m2 site. Major tenants are Baumax, with its first shop in Bucharest, French hypermarket Cora, Mobexpert, Cinema City, C&A, Flanco and Deichmann.
Next to the 130 shops, the scheme offers several cafes, a food court with space for 1,200 people, a 15-screen cinema, a 2,000 m2 bowling and billiard club and a casino. At opening, the complex is 96%-let, Sparkassen said.
'We are pleased to be opening a successful development project as outstanding as Sun Plaza, particularly during these difficult times, and it is a symbol of our continued confidence in the Romanian market,' said Friedrich Wachernig, the chairman of Sparkassen's managing board.
