Spanish companies developing or refurbishing properties with 3,000 m2 or more of space are obliged to add solar panels. Legislation to this effect was approved last year as part of the country's Technical Building Code, but became effective only from 29 March 29 this year.
The law defines 12 different climate zones in Spain and properties have to comply with different shares of solar energy depending on the region they are in. Assets located in Madrid must provide warm water generated 70% from solar panels, while in the north of the country this percentage falls to 30%
According to Spain's Observatorio de la Sostenibilidad (OSE), an independent organization founded in 2005 to study sustainability in the country, the CTE will reduce by 50% the quantity of CO2 released in the air by property assets, while will save energy by 30 to 40%, OSE's chair Luis Jiménez Herrero told Spanish news agency EFE.
