Swedish construction company Skanska signed a contract with Finnish retail conglomerate Kesko Oyj to build a new K-Citymarket store in Lahti, Finland.
Construction work on the €28 mln (SEK 320 mln) project is scheduled to begin this month and be finished by autumn 2025.
The new K-Citymarket will have roughly 20,000 m2 of total floor space, with the hypermarket itself taking up about 9,500 m2.
Skanska will be responsible for both the construction of the building and its building systems. The store will have shops on the first floor and a heated parking garage in the basement.
Janne Virtanen, Kesko's Häme regional manager, said: ‘We are happy when we can continue the more than 50-year story of Finland's oldest K-Citymarket in new, modern premises. Our goal is to bring even better services to our customers and it's great to be able to open a new store in Lahti next year.’
Sustainability is a focus for this project. The K-Citymarket will comply with EU Taxonomy standards and is aiming for a BREEAM Very Good environmental certification.
Kesko has invested around €1 bn to renovate K-grocery stores in recent years and annually invests €200–250 mln in the development of the grocery store network.
In addition to K-Citymarket Paavola in Lahti, Kesko is building new K-Citymarkets in Lempäälä Ideapark, Kuopio's Haapaniemi, Vantaa's Kivistö and Porvoo's Länsirantna in the next few years.
