Skanska has secured a NOK 1.1 bn (€96.1 mln) contract with Google-owned WS Computing AS to prepare the foundation for a massive new data centre in Telemark, Norway.
This project represents a significant investment in the region's digital infrastructure and marks Skanska's continued involvement in building modern data centers.
Construction work on the Hyperscale Data Centre in Gromstul, Skien municipality, will start immediately with an expected completion in Q4 2025. The work includes the building of new access roads with infrastructure and site development.
Anders Geirsta, executive VP for Skanska's construction operations, commented: ‘It is very gratifying to win this job where we really get to use our expertise for the core operations within facilities, where our wholly-owned subsidiary Marthinsen & Duvholt will also be central. In addition, concrete work will be carried out by Skanska's construction operations.’
According to the Norwegian Construction Industry, Google will establish itself in Skien with a new data center, planned to open in 2026 and involving an investment of €600 mln. Back in 2019, Google bought a 2 square kilometer plot of land in Skien to anticipate future data center needs.
While Google hasn't revealed the full size of its first data centre in Norway, the company has received a 240 MW power allocation for the initial phase of the project.
