UK REIT Segro and global logistics service provider Havi have celebrated the groundbreaking for a new, sustainable 30,000 m2 cold logistics centre within the first ring of Madrid, in San Fernando de Henares.

The state-of-the-art facility will be carbon-neutral, targeting a Breeam Excellent certification. It will occupy a plot of 56,000 m2 consisting of a temperature-controlled warehouse with a volume of 166,000 m³, from which Havi will operate for the supply chain of various customers. The development will also include a 2, 500 m2 office building where Havi will set up its new Madrid headquarters by the end of 2025.

The area will include a sports track and outdoor training equipment, green areas for rest and relaxation, and native vegetation and other initiatives to improve biodiversity.

Havi will invest €7 mln in innovation and robotics in this new state-of-the-art temperature-controlled centre.

Rafael Pillado, senior director of Havi, said: 'With this new distribution centre, we commit to our Plan for a Better Future. We will make our commitments to the environment real through a new sustainable building and the reduction of CO2 in transport. We will drive innovation in our distribution centres with automation and 100% electric trucks. We will contribute to improving the community by promoting the development and employment of the city and we will support our clients in their plans for sustainable growth in the long term.'
