Scandinavian hotel chain Scandic is joining forces with VR Pension Fund, the EUR 920 mln scheme for employees of the Finnish state railway, to develop a new hotel in the centre of Tampere, Finland's second largest city.
Scandic Tampere Station will be located in the city centre and will offer 207 rooms across eight storeys, a restaurant, lobby bar and three meeting rooms as well as 51 parking spaces. The property will have a gross floor area of 12,500 m2 and will be developed by construction company Lemminkäinen Oy. Construction work is due to start in August 2010 and will take around 18 months, with opening planned for 2012.
'Scandic is growing rapidly in Finland, we're adding five new hotels in 2010 alone. It's an important market, making this an exciting development for Scandic in Finland,' said Scandic's President and CEO Frank Fiskers.
The hotel will be the third by Scandic in Tampere, expanding the group's room capacity in Tampere to around 700.
Scandic is the Nordic region's leading hotel chain, with 151 hotels in 10 countries. At the end of April, the company also signed a franchise agreement with Hämeen Valtatieravintolat Oy regarding the Pumpulienkeli hotel in Forssa, which will join the Scandic chain on June 1, 2010 under the name of Scandic Forssa.
