European shopping centre investor Redevcois is seeking to obtain BREEAM 'In-Use' sustainability certification for five assets in Spain. The move comes after Redevco secured similar certification in Germany and the Netherlands.
The Spanish properties are leased to retail stores C&A and H&M. The four C&A stores are located in Madrid (La Vaguada shopping centre and at No.8 Conde de Peñalver), Barcelona (Calle Pelayo), and Palma de Mallorca. The building occupied by Swedish retailer H&M is in the Rambla de Cataluña, Barcelona, where it is known locally as the Modelo building.
The buildings have now been registered for assessment under the BREEAM 'In-Use' scheme, a necessary preliminary to achieving certification.
'Redevco has a strong commitment to the community and the environment in every country where it operates,' said Manuel Rodríguez de Guzmán, development and construction director for Redevco Spain. 'In Spain, as elsewhere, Redevco has opted for BREEAM certification as the most effective way of minimising the environmental impact of its assets.'
BREEAM ES 'In-Use' applies to buildings of all types except those for residential use, including offices and retail establishments. A key requirement is that buildings to be certified should have been in use for not less than two years; this allows their performance to be assessed on the basis of actual environmental performance data, including utility bills and other records of resource usage.
Redevco aims to have 35 BREEAM In-Use certificates across Europe by end-2012.
