Netherlands-based Redevco and Shui On Land, are the first to register a development in China for assessment under BREEAM, a leading rating tool for sustainable buildings. The partnership began working with BRE Global towards the end of 2009 and is nearing the final stages of development of suitable criteria for the BREEAM assessment of the building, Redevco said in a press release.

Robert Lie, Managing Director of Redevco Asia, said 'We chose BREEAM for its robustness and high standards of performance, as well as its ability to be adapted to China. At Wuhan Tiandi Riverview Plaza, we are combining the strengths of Redevco and Shui On Land and this leads to the development of an exciting, modern shopping and leisure development built to satisfy both commercial and environmental priorities.'

Wuhan Tiandi is a mixed development project with a gross floor area of 1,500,000 m2 that houses offices, retail and a 5-star hotel. The BREEAM assessment will be carried out on the 5-storey shopping mall, which totals just over 109,000 m2 including car park.

Carol Atkinson, Chief Executive of BRE Global, said 'This is a major landmark in the use of BREEAM on an international basis. Wuhan Tiandi Riverview Plaza is a fascinating development that is aiming for very high standards of sustainability and is using BREEAM to benchmark and improve its performance.'

The construction of the retail complex is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2010 and be completed in 2013. The BREEAM assessment will be carried out under BREEAM International Bespoke 2008, which has involved the development of specific criteria tailored to local conditions and standards within an overall BREEAM framework.

Redevco has already achieved the BREEAM standard on a shopping centre in Turkey and its C&A Eco-Store in Mainz, Germany.
