ECE Development has emerged as the winner in PropertyEU's annual ranking of the leading retail property developers in Europe.

The Hamburg-based company edged out Dutch peer Multi Development after doubling the volume of completed projects to 882,100 m2 between 2011-2013. Multi came in second, just ahead of Unibail-Rodamco.

Comparatively speaking, Unibail-Rodamco was also one of the biggest risers in this year's annual overview. Europe’s largest listed real estate company and retail specialist held onto its third position in the ranking, but saw the volume of projects completed more than double to 556,500 m2. The bulk of the developments last year involved extensions or refurbishments with the exception of the Aéroville Shopping Centre in Roissy/Tremblay, near Paris.

A major development currently on the cards is the Mall of Scandinavia in Stockholm which is the largest new development in northwestern Europe. It is due to come on stream in autumn 2015. Dutch developer MAB stormed ahead last year after completing the Hofgarten shopping centre in Solingen while Spanish designer outlet developer Neinver also jumped in the rankings after adding another 72,000 m2 of retail space in Poland. Neinver’s latest completed projects include the 53,000 m2 Katowice mall which it built together with Meyer Bergman, and a 19,000 m2 factory outlet in Warsaw.
