A quarter of construction workers in Ireland face losing their jobs by the end of 2009 as the country’s building boom runs out of steam, newspaper Irish Independent has reported. The newspaper cites a confidential report by the Irish employment and training agency FAS which suggests that the country's largest industry will shed up to 65,400 of its 279,000 employees as the economic climate worsens and property values decline.
The Irish Independent said craft workers such as bricklayers, carpenters and plasterers will be the worst hit. The report predicts 35,800 may be left without work. Another 9,000 non-craft workers such as scaffold builders and roofers will also lose their jobs, as will about 10,600 general labourers and 2,100 professionals (architects and surveyors).
But the report also predicts 20,600 jobs will be created in construction, thanks largely to Ireland's multi-billion National Development Plan (NDP).
