According to Italian press reports, Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani is in advanced discussions with owners, businessmen Marcello and Corrado Fratini for the purchase of the historic 116-room hotel.

The 21,000 m2 building, known as Palazzo della Gherardesca, dates back to 1485 and was designed by architect Giuliano da Sangallo. It is located near the Galleria degli Uffici, in the city centre.

Earlier this week, the Qataris also signed an agreement to take control of Printemps, the upmarket French department store. Exclusive talks center on the 70% stake in Printemps owned by Deustche Bank's real estate arm RREEF.
