German property veterans Heinrich Hauss and Markus Reule have launched Mellum Capital, a real estate capital advisor, following a management buyout of Brookfield Financial Europe.
The Brookfield-backed global real assets investment advisory firm Brookfield Financial (BFIN) became Sera Global in February of this year. The European business has been bought out to create an independent firm, known henceforth as Mellum Capital.
Hauss joined BFIN's European business in 2011 and led the business as CEO since 2016. Reule assumed responsibility for BFIN’s financial institutions division in 2016 and was appointed chief operating officer in 2018. Under their leadership the investment bank completed more than $100 bn of real estate transactions.
According to its founders, Mellum Capital's services include structuring complex real estate transactions and arranging individual capital raising solutions. The company will serve its global clients such as institutional real estate investors, investment managers, real estate private equity funds and developers from its offices in London and Munich.
In Europe, the team behind Mellum Capital is known for large and innovative restructuring transactions of bank real estate exposures and open-ended real estate funds. Their real estate investment banking solutions included backing the recent take-private strategy of Dream Global REIT (€4.2 bn) and CeGeReal.
Individual loans have included the financing of the Potsdamer Platz mixed use asset in Berlin (approx. €1.1 bn).
Hauss said: 'Being independent and entrepreneurial opens up new opportunities for Mellum Capital’s bright future. Our team has a wide range of skills in transaction structuring and access to a global network that has grown over the years.'
Added Reule: 'We are grateful to our clients for their trust and look forward to the next chapter in our company's history. Mellum Capital plans to expand globally in the future.'
