Prologis announced on Tuesday that all its new facilities in the UK will have to achieve a minimum rating of 'very good' under the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), the UK's national standard for best practice in sustainable development and environmental performance.
The BREEAM rating scale includes Pass, Good, Very Good and Excellent. Points are determined by measuring the impact the facility has on the environment and the employees working within it.
'Today's announcement is a continued demonstration of our commitment to sustainable warehouse construction,' said Jack Rizzo, head of global construction for Prologis. 'Earlier this year we detailed our plans to build all of our US warehouse space according to nationally-accepted green building standards, so we are extremely pleased to now be implementing a similar program outside the US. We are eager to continue expanding our sustainable development plans on a worldwide basis, and to delivering the most sought-after distribution space on the market.'
So far, Prologis has developed eight BREEAM-rated distribution centers comprising more than 3.1 million square feet at locations throughout the UK. ProLogis has also started construction on a ninth facility, totalling 535,000 square feet, which will be located at Prologis Park Sideway and is targeted for BREEAM Excellent.
Prologis is the largest provider of industrial distribution facilities in the UK, with more than 1.72 million m2 of industrial space owned, managed and under development by end-December 2007.
