Sonae Sierra, an international specialist in the development of shopping malls, is to refurbish the Colombo shopping centre in Benfica, near Lisbon. The shopping mall is currently the largest shopping centre in Portugal and will celebrate a decade of existence next year. It provides a lettable are of 119,738 m2, and includes 413 retail stores and 6,800 parking spaces. Developed by Sonae Sierra, the centre is owned by the Portuguese development company and ING Real Estate.

'We are currently completing the planning of the project, therefore we will be able to publicly present it really soon,' Sonae Sierra's ceo Alvaro Portela told the Portoguese newspaper Vida Inmobiliaria. The manager said his objective is that 'the centre will be valued at EUR 2 bn in three year's'.

Two of Sonae Sierra's shopping and leisure centres, RioSul Shopping in Seixal, and Mediterranean Cosmos in Thessalonica, Greece, were nominated for the 2007 European Shopping Centre Awards in November 2006.
