Pirelli RE's Wohnstadt Carl Legien housing estate, which is co-owned with joined venture partner RREEF, has been given the status of World Heritage by Unesco along with five other housing estates also in Berlin, the company said on Wednesday. The estates built in the 1920s are now under special protection and have the same status as the Great Chinese Wall, Venice and its Lagoon or the Historic Center of Florence. Following the decision by Unesco in Quebec, the estates in Berlin are now deemed 'worthy of permanent preservation.'

The Wohnstadt Carl Legien was one of the first social building projects from the 1920s in Germany in Berlin's Pankow district. It is the most urbane and compact among the Berlin housing estates that are representative of social housing in the Weimar Republic.
Carlo Puri Negri, CEO, Pirelli RE said: 'With the status of Unesco World Heritage site, national and international prestige will rise further. This brings an enormous upgrading for the housing estate and with it many opportunities, not only for the company, but also for the region and its inhabitants.'
