European logistics park developer and operator PointPark Properties (P3) has signed a deal with solar park operator SolOps to rent the roofs of its distribution halls in the Czech Republic. The company said on Wednesday that it will rent out the 335,000 m2 roof in its PointPark Prague D1 and PointPark Prague D8 distribution parks for the project.

The photovoltaic panels will generate over 7 MWh, making the installation one of the largest of its kind in Central Europe. SolOps, which is renting the roofs and operating the system, will invest about CZK 600 mln (EUR 23 mln) in the project. The entire system is expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2010. Following the installation, the logistics properties will be energy self-sufficient.

PointPark Properties said that using alternative renewable energy 'has become one of the priorities of the company'.

'Aside from our strategy of being as environmental friendly as possible, we also thought about maximizing benefits for our clients,' said Tomás Novotný, managing director for P3 in the Czech Republic. 'We will now be able to offer them not only the lowest price for energy, but the additional resources will allow us to increase the comfort and services we provide.'

'Our Euroregion needs to take more immediate action in terms of saving energy and using alternative energy sources. It’s high time that other companies on the market start taking action like PointPark Properties already has,' said Martin Sgalitzer from SolOps.
