Rotterdam, Venlo and Amsterdam are among Europe's leading logistics hubs, according to a new report released ahead of the Provada real estate fair in Amsterdam.

The three cities all rank in the top 10 of Colliers International's report ‘Top European Logistics Hubs’ which was published on the eve of the Provada fair which runs from 4-6 June. The report compares 40 European logistics hubs.

Among the Dutch cities, Rotterdam is performing the best with a 3rd position behind Düsseldorf and Antwerp. Venlo and Amsterdam rank sixth and seventh.

Rotterdam and Amsterdam owe their strong performance mostly to their good infrastructure and accessibility through the mainports. Venlo performs well because of its large catchment area: within a nine-hour drive the city can serve 152 million European consumers.

The enlargement of the European Union towards eastern European cities like Prague and Bratislava is the main threat to the Dutch hubs, the report says.

Marc Wolthuis, director logistics Colliers, said: 'The area between the harbours of Antwerp and Amsterdam and the German Ruhr area is a very interesting location for logistic activities. The large catchment area for shippers and the high income and density of the population makes the area leading for the logistic sector. International investors have also discovered the possibilities, and this leads to prospects for (local) entrepreneurs'.
