European retail developer Multi Corporation is set to open two urban projects in the Netherlands in September. The projects include the first expansion phase of downtown Nieuwegein near Utrecht, and the new town square (Stadsplein) of Spijkenisse near Rotterdam.

The first phase of the Nieuwegein scheme involves the addition of 20,000 m2 of shops. When the second phase opens in 2013, the city will have a total of 56,000 m2 retail space - making this one of the largest urban developments in the Netherlands.

The town square in the centre of Spijkenisse is being extended by 12,500 m2 of shops, restaurants and apartments. The expansion of the parking facilities also creates an important starting point for visiting the city. Simultaneously, the adjoining mall, The Kopspijker owned by Corio, is being completely renovated. Corio is also the owner of Stadsplein.

Both projects are almost fully leased and will be welcoming a large number of stores that were not previously represented there. Nieuwegein and Spijkenisse both include The Sting, Saturn and New Yorker.

Nieuwegein has Men at Work, CoolCat, Perry Sport and a Jumbo supermarket, while Spijkenisse features Vila, Pieces, Invito, SuperCoop and Big Bazar.
