The Carlsberg City District, located in the heart of Copenhagen, aims to be Denmark’s first 'green city’.
The historical site, where Carlsberg’s famous beers have been produced for generations, will be transformed into a 25-hectare multifunctional and climate-friendly city district.
Development company Carlsberg Byen recently started work on the site, which is set to become one of the most sustainable districts in the world in the next 10-15 years. It will house retailers, educational institutions, private apartments, sports venues, cultural centres and offices.
'While our development takes into account the history of Carlsberg, we have also designed it with the future in mind, and we aim for Carlsberg City District to be one of the first "green cities" in Denmark. All new architectural projects will be constructed as low-energy buildings to ensure sustainability and CO2 neutrality,' said Jens Nyhus, CEO of Carlsberg Byen.
A Danish consortium acquired the former Carlsberg brewery site in central Copenhagen for DKK2.5 bn (then €335 mln) in 2012. Carlsberg has a 25% stake in the consortium. The other members are property development foundation Realdania (25% stake); pension funds PFA Pension (20%), PenSam (15%) and Topdanmark (15%).
