McArthurGlen, a developer, owner and manager of designer outlet villages, opened its fifth designer outlet village in Italy last week. La Reggia Designer Outlet is the first retail outlet in the region of Campania. The outlet village is located 30 km north of Naples.

The first phase of La Reggia includes 17,500 m2 of gross leasable area across 100 units and features one of Europe's biggest solar energy schemes ever used in the retail sector, with 2,700 m2 of solar panels integrated into the roof. The panels will produce sufficient energy to cover 30% of the centre's energy needs, equivalent to 268,200 kWh.

The second phase of the centre is already under way; the first half will open at the end of 2010 (4,500 m2) and the second in the second quarter of 2011 (an additional 4,500 m2). In total, once the second phase is open, the EUR 120-mln La Reggia outlet will offer 26,500 m2 of retail with a total of 140 stores.

The centre, which is McArthurGlen's 19th designer outlet village in Europe, houses leading brands such as Aspesi, Ballantyne, Bikkembergs, Blumarine, Calvin Klein, Escada, Gianfranco Ferré, Tommy Hilfiger and Valentino. The complex reflects the Rococo style of the Royal Palace, La Reggia di Caserta, which was built by the Bourbon kings and is one of the region's main tourist attractions.

In addition to Serravalle Designer Outlet near Milan, McArthurGlen's other designer outlet villages in Italy are: Castel Romano Designer Outlet, near Rome; Barberino Designer Outlet, near Florence; and Veneto Designer Outlet near Venice, which opened in 2008 as the group's fourth designer outlet in Italy.

Prior to the opening of La Reggia Designer Outlet, McArthurGlen operated 95,000 m2 of retail space in Italy. By the end of 2011, this will increase to around 150,000 m2, with the opening of the two phases of La Reggia Designer Outlet, as well as the opening of new phases at Castel Romano (an additional 8,000 m2 in 2011), Barberino (6,000 m2 in 2011) and Veneto Designer Outlets (14,100 m2 in 2010 and 2011).
