Moscow is the third most attractive European location for international retailers and the Russian capital continues to gain in popularity, according to Jones Lang LaSalle's Cross-Border Retailer Index - Destination Europe 2013.
The company’s new report, presented at Mapic in Cannes, analyses the presence and expansion plans of 250 international retailers.
London comes out as the most attractive city across 57 key retail markets, with 235 of the 250 retailers studied operating in the UK capital. Paris ranks second in the Cross-Border Retailer Index, accounting for 217 retailers. Moscow is third in the rating with 196 of the 250 retailers.
Vladimir Aleksandrovskiy, head of retail tenant representation at Jones Lang LaSalle for Russia & CIS, said: 'It is an interesting fact that Moscow goes ahead of Milan - the 'fashion capital' of Europe - where only 174 retailers operate at the moment. However, the biggest share of international retailers operating in Moscow is represented by mass-market brands, while of the premium and luxury brands penetration is not so high in this city.'
St Petersburg, Russia’s second city, is ranked 8th in the top 10 ranking. Some 142 international retailers now operate there, with half of them belonging to the mass market segment.
Drilling down to the most popular locations for luxury brands, London and Paris take the first top spots. Moscow follows with a significant gap. St Petersburg dropped to 11th place, ousted from the luxury top-10 by Istanbul and Zurich.
