UK property REIT Land Securities is the only British company to be named in the 2007 Sustainable Business List drawn up by SustainableBusiness.com. Now in its sixth year, the global list consists of 20 public companies that are having a substantial impact on the creation of an environmentally sustainable society.
The list focuses on four areas: energy efficiency/renewable energy, green building, consumer products and natural foods/natural products. Land Securities was selected for its approach to enviromental management across its property portfolio, both with regard to new developments and existing schemes.
Land Securities said the judges were particularly impressed by the group's insistence on achieving green building standards for new developments, recycling initiatives, the implementation of grey water technology at its shopping centres and the incorporation of Fair Trade products within the Group's and its clients' catering services.
The list was topped by Austria's Best Water Technology, followed by Canon of Japan and US company Comverge. Half the companies making up the list are American.
