GPIF, which manages $1.44 trl of assets, has just made another step into global alternative investment by appointing Pantheon and StepStone as their fund of funds managers for their Global Infrastructure Mandate.

An overseas real estate fund of fund manager is expected to be appointed soon, according to Japanese broker and fund placement agency Asterisk. Real estate investment overseas will be split across two macro-regions, US and non-US.

Earlier this month GPIF also appointed international real estate expert Hideto Yamada, as its new property head.

As former managing director of Mitsui Fudosan UK, Yamada led the company in several large-scale urban redevelopment projects, including the €3 bn redevelopment of BBC Television Centre and White City Place in London. That proved to be one of the largest-ever overseas projects undertaken by a Japanese real estate firm.
