Fifty four international retailers began operating in Germany for the first time in 2012 as retail properties in the country saw particularly strong occupier demand in the second half of the year, according to CBRE.

International retailers accounted for 69% of the 75 new brands launched in the country over the year.

‘In both 2012 and 2011 about 50 new international brands launched in Germany and we expect a similar level of activity in 2013,' said Karsten Burbach, head of retail at CBRE Germany.

Rental transactions grew to their highest in five years, with 3,028 lease agreements registered, marking an increase of 37.8% over 2010. Retail rents rose across all property types, including secondary and suburban locations. Non-German retailers accounted for 600 or a fifth of all new leases agreed in the year.
