The International Council of Shopping Centers has honoured retail projects in 12 countries at the annual International Design and Development Awards in Arizona, US.

The International Council of Shopping Centers has honoured retail projects in 12 countries at the annual International Design and Development Awards in Arizona, US.

Many of the winners this year were from Eastern Europe, reflecting growing prosperity and a recent retail building boom. Poland is home to three of the big winners: Stary Browar in Pozan won the design award in the category of renovated or expanded mixed-use projects; Zlote Tarasy in Warsaw won the design award in the category of innovative design and development of a new project with over 500,000 square feet of total retail space; and Manufaktura in Lodz, built on the site of former textile mills, won a design award in the category of innovative development and design of a new mixed-use project.

Galerija Centrs in Riga, Latvia, won the design award in the category of renovated or expanded project with between 150,000 and 500,000 square feet of retail space.

This year's winners also include Entre Deux in the Dutch city of Maastricht, the Westfield San Francisco Centre, Honolulu's Waikiki Beach Walk, Villach, Austria's Atrio and Branson Montana Landing.

The judges singled out two winning projects for special recognition. One of the winners will be named 'best of the best' for overall excellence. Another will be honored with the Sustainable Design Award. ICSC will announce these winners during a special event at RECon in Las Vegas next May.
