Central and Eastern Europe accounted for 67% of the continent’s new shopping centre space in the second half of 2013, according to new research from Cushman & Wakefield.

Overall, 3.6 million m2 of mall space was added in the second half of last year, with 2.4 million m2 in Central and Eastern Europe.

The continent has a total of 154 million m2 of shopping centre floor space, according to the report. France has the most, at 17.3 million m2, with the UK and Russia following closely behind.

'Appetite for shopping centre investment is returning to pre-crisis levels,' said James Chapman, head of Cushman & Wakefield’s Central European capital markets team. 'The completion of numerous new centres in smaller cities - with a 100,000-plus population - has helped to intensify competition and attract investor attention.'
