US privately held investor Hines has selected architects Gehry Partners to design its new 300-unit residential tower in Berlin.

The development, which is owned by Hines, will be located at the D4 construction site, adjacent to Hines' recently developed Die Mitte retail building.

As Berlin's first new high-rise residential development since the 1970s, the building will have a maximum height of 148 metres, likely becoming the tallest building in Berlin. It will offer 500,000 sq ft (46,000 m2) of apartments and hotel space.

The project represents the third time Hines has worked with architecture firm Gehry. The architects also designed Hines' DZ Bank in Berlin and the New World Center in Miami Beach, Florida, for which Hines served as development manager.

Hines opened its first office outside the US in Berlin in 1991. Projects completed and managed by Hines Germany include Die Mitte-Shopping am Alexanderplatz, Sony Center Berlin, Benrather Karree in Düsseldorf, Uptown München in Munich, Hofstatt in Munich, Siemens Headquarters in Munich and Postquartier in Stuttgart.
