Hines, the international real estate firm, announced on Wednesday that the 30-story Garibaldi Tower in Porta Nuova officially became the tallest building in Italy, rising to 750 sq ft (70 m2) with the addition this past weekend of a 256-foot-tall spire.

The Cesar Pelli-designed tower is four times higher than the Leaning Tower of Pisa and twice as high as the Cathedral of Milan.

'Completing the tower with a sculptural spire symbolizes the importance of the entrepreneurial commitment and the collaboration of investors, banks and our team. This tower is dedicated to Italy and its ability to create extraordinary outcomes, even in bleaker times,' said Manfredi Catella, CEO of Hines Italia.

The Porta Nuova Garibaldi Tower is 100% leased to Unicredit. It is pre-certified LEED Gold.

Garibaldi is a 1,096,679-sq-ft mixed-use development incorporating offices, retail, hotel and an exhibition center adjacent to two other Hines projects, Varesine and Isola. Combined the developments are known as Porta Nuova, and represent the largest development project in Milan today.
