Hammerson, the UK real estate investment trust (REIT), has secured an 'Excellent' environmental rating for its developments at Cabot Circus, Bristol and 60 Threadneedle Street in the City of London.

Hammerson said that £500 mln (EUR630 mln) Cabot Circus in Bristol, developed in partnership with Land Securities, is the first major shopping scheme to be rated 'Excellent' under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Award (BREEAM). It also scooped the BREEAM Retail Award, with the judges highlighting factors such as the scheme's naturally ventilated, unconditioned streetscape; roof gardens within residential areas and the creation of a green travel plan. The Cabot Circus scheme opened in September.

The £125 million City office development at 60 Threadneedle Street in London has also been awarded an 'Excellent' rating. The 20,600-m2, nine-storey building, adjacent to the Group’s development at 125 Old Broad Street, has a 'green roof' with a solar photovoltaic array.

Other Hammerson schemes to receive BREEAM Ratings this year include the group's office development at 125 Old Broad Street and Highcross Leicester, the major retail-led regeneration project opened in September 2008. Both schemes were awarded a 'Very Good' rating.

Hammerson is targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating for all new development projects as part of its CR objectives and programme for 2008 and beyond. Paul Edwards, head of sustainability at Hammerson, said: 'We recognise that benchmarking and measurement are key to understanding and monitoring improvement. BREEAM provides us with the benchmark and the team have delivered two fantastic projects demonstrating clear leadership in environmental performance.'.
