Grainger plc, the UK's largest listed residential property owner, has been appointed to redevelop a 2.2 hectare site in the centre of the English town of Newbury.

West Berkshire Council and Network Rail have signed the contract with Grainger for the retail-led development as part of the plan Newbury 2025 Vision.

The scheme will be funded as a private-sector development through Grainger, with the land owned by West Berkshire Council and Network Rail.

The site, which lies between the railway station and Market Street and includes the existing bus station and council car park, is not deemed to be suitable for rail travellers coming into central Newbury.

Network Rail have already announced that Newbury station is to be converted to rail line electrification to create a faster and greener service to London.
