Some 40% of international retailers intend to open stores in Germany in 2014, making it the most targeted market in the world, according to a survey of 130 global brands by CBRE.

More than one-third of the 130 retailers planned to open more than 40 stores globally in 2014, a bigger proportion than in any of the report’s previous four years.

Germany was the most popular target, with 40% of the retailers planning openings there this year. Some 70% of the retailers originated from Europe, which was also the top target for US retailers after their home market.

France (with openings planned by 26% of international retailers) and the UK (25%) completed the top three. China, in fifth place with 22%, was the only non-EU entrant in the top 10. The US came 13th, being targeted by 14% of retailers.

CBRE defines an international retailer as one which has stores in more than one country. Participant names are being kept confidential.
