A team of students from IREBS University Regensburg and Hafencity University in Hamburg have won the first European Student Design Competition organised by the Urban Land Institute. The award-winning concept for a new development at Hamburg's waterfront was announced on Wednesday at the ULI Trends Conference in Hamburg.

The winning team won EUR 35,000 while the three finalists were each awarded EUR 7,000. The competition was sponsored by ECE Projektmanagement, Grosvenor and Hines. The ULI Student Design Competition was first introduced in the US in 2003. The new harbour development in Hamburg encompasses an area of 57 hectares aimed at linking the old city with a former industrial site on the waterfront. During his introduction, Bill Kistler, president of ULI Europe, called Hamburg Hafencity the biggest and most exciting regeneration project in Europe.
