Hypermarket anchors in France are poised to become one of the losers of the current crisis in the retail sector, according to Henrike Waldburg, head of acquisitions and sales at German open-ended fund Union Investment. 'In the coming years, we will see a distinction between two types of retail concepts: discounters and high-quality shopping centre schemes in inner city centres. They will be the winners.'

Waldburg was speaking at a panel discussion at the Mapic retail fair which took place in Cannes last week. She added that now was the right time to buy core retail product in core markets. 'Yields will stabilise in the period ahead.' She added, however, that the competition for this type of product is increasing. 'We're seeing new investors like specialist funds, but also more aggressive opportunity funds.'
